ESPN is the one who made these bowl games seem meaningless with their push for a playoff

ESPN isn't responsible for the BCS or the CFB playoffs.

Using your "position" to try and belittle someone in an online arguement tells me you are a shitty cheap lawyer.

but they are responsible for shifting ALL of their coverage towards playoff talk which has the effect of completely diminishing 95% of the regular season games and nearly all of the bowls.

And why would anyone be so pro NIL and opt outs as to say a professional must suck at their position, someone who actually worked hard and paid his dues and now is reaping the benefits.... like a coach does... or anyone other than an entitled child.

Your sentence structure & punctuation are terrible. Your understanding of English grammar didn't reap the benefits. Maybe you should have paid more dues in English class.

No it doesn't and why would they want to undercut their regular season broadcasts that
They spend hundreds of millions on?

People need to remember the bowls are just practice for next year's team. Ohio State had a bunch of opt outs for today's Rose Bowl. Younger guys played in their place and did well. They should have a head start on having a great season next year.

Think Tyrann Mathieu being a super hero in the 2010 Cotton Bowl setting up a season like 2011.

Valid counterpoint and was mentioning that this evening. Will give those guys who played in that game, major momentum heading to 2022.

You two are all fired up still? I actually dont enjoy my career that much and hate most attorneys. I mentioned it solely to explain I know what NIL was when one of you said I prob was too stupid to understand it (used the word "tard" I believe)... typical when someone online refutes a point they get attacked.

Theyre right, it is absolutely entitled kids, it has become ridiculous. NIL made it worse, these kids have no understanding of a team and loyalty.

“These kids have no loyalty!” says Grown man who would leave his $50k job for $100k at a competing company, in reference to an 18 year old who decides to miss 1 college game at end of season in order to secure millions of dollars

You should apologize for not being able to comprehend the concept of past & present. So you're supposed to be a lawyer, right?

Correct it is a business, now that they've removed the facade of "student" from the athlete part. While for many this is their pinnacle and they want to go out on top many others have a chance at greater earnings. Why take a chance and add another opportunity to get hurt.
Some I see are saying, "well you can get hurt anywhere" and that is true but in an actual game that chance is increased greatly, so if you have millions on the table why take that chance.
If his injury causes him to miss his pro-day, schedule it later, struggle, etc and drops him a few spots in the draft then he is missing out on hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars.

CFB is a business and it is a business decision for these players. Fans just have to suffer from it because well, they are fanatical about their teams and CFB in general.

This is an excellent thread with a lot of good points. These problems are bigger than any player or any one coach. I really don’t like BK, but if he wanted the LSU job the window to take it was in November. That’s just the way it is.

ESPN has its fingerprints on all of the recent changes in CFB yet reports on them as if it’s a neutral observer with no agency. One of many reasons to loathe that network.

quote:

Irony is the Citrus Bowl with Iowa and Kentucky is packed. Two schools that have no illusions about who they are but the fans still support the teams.

Iowa is what an actual college program looks like rather than a minor league semi pro team. An actual minor league is the only way out of this but it unfortunately won’t happen because there’s no financial incentive for TPTB to make it happen, at least not for now.

We have too many damn bowls. We need to get rid of half of them to be honest. The fact that half these bowls are only half attended is nothing new. This didn't start this year it has been going on for decades with the lower tier bowls. They are rarely full and when they are it usually do to sponsors giving tickets away to the local community.

The way they always have to talk about the CFP during halftime of any bowl game on ESPN rather than focus on what game they are showing or what other games are on at the moment isn’t helping. They are making the bowls feel meaningless. Commentary always circles back to the CFP.

Ill add on to this its not just bowls. CFP talk starts from the beginning. And it takes over halfway through the season. They’ll talk over the games about it and the players they expect to see in it.

If I am watching LaTech vs UAB, or Arkansas vs Texas A&M, I don’t need to hear about how Alabama or OSU are expecting to be in the CFP or what awards their QB may win.

Coach Kelly opted out of coaching the ND bowl game.

What’s happened in last two years is players are starting to act more like coaches in how they approach their futures and people don’t like that.

I hear this, but at some point, that’s reality. Adults get to do things that kids can’t. Assistant coaches have left before bowls. Head coaches have had handshake deals before bowls. It’s nothing new.
