Donate the body to science seems logical if they even do that anymore.

My mother died in 2015, had a living will that had her donating her body to science. Sold her house and didn't get any ashes back as far as I know. She had the Alz, and my second oldest sister became the executioner of the estate after she died. Had a memorial at our church where we grew up. Not sure of the cost, couldn't of been much.

Call local crematory direct. Do not get a funeral home involved. They will pick up body from hospital, and normal charges are ~ 700-1000 for cremation. Amazon carries urns same as funeral homes for around $70-$150. Went thru similar deal w/SIL who had liver failure. Also, Social Security offers a one-time benefit of ~$255 but you must apply.

that's a lot of work. You have to pull her teeth first.

If you bury her within 24 hours, no embalming necessary.

Can't do this. This would have had to be prearranged prior to death and as of a few months ago, most places were still not accepting because of Covid rules. It's not as easy as it sounds to donate your body to science.

A family member donated their body last month to the Univ South Alabama Anatomical Program. The forms were filled out about 2 weeks prior to their death when the deceased was receiving hospice care. We did have to pay for transportation of the body from the family members residence to Univ S Bama. Total cost was $300 for transportation.

It was a very easy process. Fill out the form prior to death. Call transportation after death. That was it.

Usually there are laws for abandoned, unclaimed or rejected bodies. Same as indigents. Coroner will be directed to have them buried in a proper manner and send the bills to the administrator of estate or court clerk to try to get them paid.

One thing I learned when my mom died is that the guy at the funeral home is nothing more than a shitty salesman taking advantage of people in times of grief.

I watched the number balloon 600% in a matter of minutes. My older cousin was just nodding along with it. I let him finish his pitch and then spin the previously printed forms around to sign.

And then I belittled a man twice my age lower than a dog.

They are scum of the fricking earth for doing that to people when they are at their most vulnerable.

My mom had just died, but I won't let anyone lie and cheat me out of money.

Eta: Rabenhurst for the record. A sales pitch is just that; doesn't matter if it's a car, a company, or a body.

I really don't understand the point of burials.

Waste of money, takes up useful land that could be parks and after the first generation that knew the person is gone, no one remembers or visits.

The exception would be places like Arlington, etc. But I don't even think then burying bodies is necessary. There could be memorials without actually putting people in a hole in the ground.

a lot of mil cemeteries have places for ashes, sort of like walls of post office boxes for cremains

Arlington is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been, so I realize I'm kind of talking out of both sides of my mouth.

Very nicely said.

I second this statement.

OP: Sorry for the loss with regards to your daughter.

Punch Bowl is my favorite, I went to a funeral on Long Island a few years ago and it was one of the most beautiful/unusual cemeteries I'd ever seen, it wasn't acres and acres of graves, it was like driving into a secluded eucalyptus forest, hilly, winding roads with little turnoffs to family plot areas, pretty sure it was a final resting place for the rich and swanky
