Architect

I’ve never worked as an architect, mind you, but I’ve dealt with enough to realize it ain’t exactly what I thought it might be as a kid.

One here. It is a career that potentially could bring opportunity and stability, and luckily a rewarding career. However, location or the city where an architect lives has a lot to do with the flow of projects. Taking into account how much an architect needs to know, we will never get paid enough. I'd say the few architects who are successful financially are those who took the courage and risk to open their own firm. If you are an architect working for another one as an employee, there will be no room for growth.

Airline Pilot. Since I was a wee lad I wanted to fly those 747s. Talked with a couple of retired pilots, the planes basically fly themselves and you fly A to B and B to A over and over, but the money was good.

Airline Pilot.

It was an awesome career for a time. I think every profession has a heyday, and for airline pilots it’s was the 60’s through the 80’s. The 707 revolutionized the industry and made the job glamorous. They made outrageous money and had women chasing them. Talk to retirees that were captains in this era, and they’re some of the coolest guys you’ll ever meet. Most are very well off and drive sports cars.

Deregulation turned it into common transportation, like riding a Greyhound bus. Glamour left, and so did the money. Pilots start at regional carriers for poverty wages and many never make it out of the system. And now automation aims to eliminate pilots completely. The heyday is long gone.

I would say most. I don’t think as a kid I would be expected to work 10-12 hour days. It’s amazing how being plugged in with technology has destroyed work/life balance for a lot of people. Remember the days of dad being home from work by 5:30 and not having to be taking calls or emails all night?

My dream job was railroad engineer. Driving a train seemed to be the best. Now I am a retired CPA. Boring but safe.

High school football coach. Before you know it, the kids are graduating high school and I’m still trying to find ways to shut down the Run/Pass Option in May. It’s been a rewarding career, but damn if i dont wish i knew my kids.
