6 years ago I hired an engineer to shadow me. He was terrible in front of customers. He had no people skills, but after 6 years I recommended him to take my place when I was promoted. He had become a strong leader and could step in for me whenever I had other commitments.

OP is right. There's just some difficulty there that my experience correlates with OP's statement. They need people to help guide them and then there's a chance for them to grow out of their shell.

There is nothing unique about Roger living in Alaska. Here in LA, we have the busiest port system in the US with nice paying jobs all over it. Like Roger and plenty of people I talk to at various companies, most people can't pass a drug test.

I know a lot of guys trying to get into plants and are struggling. Good guys, clean records, no drug use, decently intelligent. I don’t know

Disagree with Gen X being responsible for raising these Gen Z kids this way. I'm Gen X and my kid and every X'er I know has raised really good hard working kids. We didn't coddle them at all.

Through the years I spent around these kids, coaching them in sports and such, so really got to know them. They were all pretty good, well-grounded kids.

Maybe anecdotal, but that's my experience. Don't know what happened to the rest of them.
