Im thinking that all of the students who are there at Woodlawn from the the BR area currently get to stay because they were at the school before the ruling hit. From this date on, new students from BR area will not be allowed to attend the magnet program at Woodlawn. I think it will be St. George only.

This is totally wrong. This was addressed at the press conference this morning. There will be no school changes any time soon unless the EBRSS makes them.

SG is not yet in the school business.

I’m hoping they put out detailed annexation rules soon.

Yeah, I live in the city of BR, and I’m zoned for Woodlawn Middle & High Schools, and that’s where my neighbor’s kids go - I wonder where her younger kids will go

It makes sense not to pull the kids out of school in the middle of high school. That would suck.

We are zoned for Tara, which I wouldn't send my daughter to. She'd be going back to private before that. Sadly, that used to be a decent school too, as did Broadmoor, Lee, Woodlawn etc. Even Belaire wasn't a dumpster fire in the early 90s.

Are there any unincorporated areas left in the parish?

Yes, the areas not in city limits & not in STG. I live in one of those areas, but I’m guessing the city of BR will annex us? Or STG?

The assessor's last update to the website sucks.

Probably by design TBH.

They don’t like people looking at how much gets swept to the general fund then finding where, by law, x% of the general fund goes directly to BRPD and y% goes to BRFD, both of which only serve within certain limits and not the parish at large.

Ascension is currently going through something kinda similar with Prairieville High and Dutchtown high.

Kind of the similar, but not really. Both of those schools are in the same district, only the attendance zones are changing.

Still, courts have routinely ruled for the least disruption to kids as possible. I would assume that an agreement would be made on a transitional period for students already attending classes in one school district when a new school district opens.

None of those schools were necessarily great but every time Judge Parker would start moving kids around, more people left for private / parochial schools or a surrounding parish.

The quality of kids in the non-magnet portions of the system is at an all time low between having three magnet HS removing good kids from the regular schools combined with lots of other kids not entering the system at all.

What used to be a bell curve of kids from A to F is now heavily weighted towards C D F because A and B kids are in magnets or in a different system entirely.

When Central’s system formed, they were willing to work with EBRPSS to let kids currently in the system finish up there. EBRPSS told them to frick off.

What I think we are going to see is that the lottery for magnet spots is going to start being weighted in a way to where people within the boundaries of St George aren’t getting in, meaning more spots for students living within BR proper.

If so, that’s a discrimination lawsuit waiting to happen because the SEBR ISD is dead and there is currently no St George system working its way through the legislature.

Yeah, we even had forced busing at Central when I was there because we were still in EBRPSS. I guess Central was far enough out where it was probably only 10-15% of the student population though, so it was still a viable option for most.

They carved out a Central district right in the middle of Scotlandville.

The plan of government is interesting. Five member council. Three elected, two at large. One of the at-large seats will be filled by the mayor.

When can we start predicting who will fill these seats?

Yes, but the Legislature is looking at amending the state constitution in order to make it less onerous on those wanting to form an ISD.

I’m an optimist and I hope it becomes a reality sooner than later. Maybe by August 2028 we can have schooos???

After they're done, that area will be Prairieville only and Dutchtown will be Geismer only.

They did the same thing when Dutchtown opened with the EA and St Amant kids

I hope it’s with the people who fought so hard for this thing for 10 fricking years now. Those who held the press conference today. They deserve to lead it and should lead it.

What did you mean when you predicted SG kids would not be let in magnet programs anymore?

I didnt say that. I said BR students may not be able to attend Woodlawn's magnet program since StG is its own city now. As of right now, there are kids from all over BR thats attending WHS who doesnt stay in the district because of the magnet program. When StG gets its own school system, I'm sure that will stop.

That’s just wrong. If a family lives in the EBR district then their children can go to EBR schools.

Currently all kids that live in SG also live in the EBR district unless there are rare exceptions.

People that live within 1 mile of a magnet program already get preference. Either way, the magnet “lottery” is hardly a lottery.
