Who has been to it?

Is the sushi on this bar any good?

Specialty type rolls or basic grocery story rolls?

never had AYCE sushi, seems like a red flag...

I'm assuming it's the same Sushi Masa as what's in Lafayette, I've been once and thought it was just ok. If I remember right for the $33 you get AYCE on everything on the menu and a drink(domestic beer/well cocktail). Their menu is fairly large so there's a bunch of options it's better than the sushi from Rouses, but not as quality as you'd hope for.

We never went back because we'd rather spend similar money to get better sushi/food/cocktails at somewhere like Tsunami.

judge for yourself, I've been there dozens of times and never left disappointed.
Is it 5-star high end sushi - NO
But it's solid groceries for the price spent
Lunch used to be $14.95 and dinner $19.95

Mango salmon

pepper tuna 2 ways

Been there a few times. You have to eat what you ordered or they charge you and you can take it with you. So make sure you don't over order.

Sushi Masa actually isn't a buffet, everything is made to order, you have a waiter, etc. It's basically a full menu of a normal sushi restaurant available to you, the rolls were just smaller to try to prevent waste, which if they feel you've ordered too much and don't eat it they upcharge you. It's not that it's was bad food, it was more like I could get a better sushi dining experience elsewhere, and for cheaper.

Its not bad but its quantity vs quality compared to what you can get literally next door at Ichiban or Sushi Yama.

$36 isnt worth it. $20 ok I could do it. For $36, you can just go to a regular sushi place and eat. Just dont go to Yama or Umami.

It's not terrible but it's not 5 star. I've been about 6 or 7 times and enjoyed it every time. It's not a buffet, they give you a menu and you can order whatever you want off of it. I think there is a limit to sashimi though.

If I go, I get the hibachi stuff like tempura, teriyaki meats, etc.

My wife, kids, and SIL’s family love the place and a number of them have rolls there that they love. There is a mix of normal rolls and more specialty stuff.

Can you get better sushi quality elsewhere ? Absolutely. Oishi, Shinto, Fuji, Tokyo all have incredible fish. I'll respectfully disagree on having a cheaper bill comparing Sushi Masa to other restaurants prices. Especially Tsunami whose prices are higher than giraffe pu$$y. In reality, it's comparing apples to oranges: 1 is AYCE at a set price for good sushi, the others have individual prices ranging from $7 to $25 per roll for great sushi.

Sushi is one of my favorite foods as I've been eating it for 40 years, since 1983. The first place to sell sushi in Lafayette was Chung King in Time Plaza, currently Blu Basil. Tam was a young sushi chef at a Chinese restaurant in Baton Rouge (College Drive) during the late 80's and early 90's. He moved to Lafayette around 1994 had a small sushi bar inside Chung King. He then opened his own restaurant, Samuri in the Ambassador Rowe shopping center by Chuck E Cheese, and a 2nd location in Broussard. Samuri was my go-to place in Laffy because I was loyal to Tam who always took care of me. I've eaten at all the others, some good CS experiences, some bad. IMO, Tsunami is solid, but I feel like it's the LaFonda of sushi restaurants. LOUD and people go there to hang out, socialize, and drink with friends.

The waiters are usually overworked but they are also made to drag out things as long as possible.

You order another roll and by time you wait twenty minutes you’re full, aggravated, and don’t want it but then they bring it. Then it’s time to play the threaten to make you pay for it game they try.

And the sushi just isn’t that good anyways. Any of the appetizer orders and sashimi pieces are tiny little pieces too.

I hit it for lunch sometimes.. Seems worth it for 20 bucks, but I dont know about 33. I do think the dinner menu has more stuff on it though.

Went there once or twice when I was in college, but it wasn’t $33. It was decent enough sushi which is all you can expect from an all you can eat situation.

He has since sold it. I frequent the one in Broussard (picked up from there last night), and it has gone downhill on the service side since Tam left.

It’s fine. We go for lunch sometimes. It’s not the full menu, but it has most of the rolls and it’s much cheaper.

But I bet I could probably eat $32.95 worth of their Spicy Kani Salad.

If you go around “normal” lunch or dinner times, prepare to wait because it’s always packed.

It's okay for what it is. My wife and really enjoy Umami and realize when we go to Masa to temper expectations.

The food quality has usually been fine and you can order sashimi apps and green mussels until your heart's content.

The service is slow and they are overworked. Like someone said, you'll forget you ordered something and then it will appear 15 minutes later.

But for $32 a person, that high. For two you are looking at $100+ with drinks and tip. i'd rather go to Umami and spend $100.

This was my experience as well. Waiter hardly ever comes by to take more order and forgot a couple of the appetizers we ordered. It was disappointing.

I've been there several times. The Lafayette one is supposedly better.

Every is decent, but its 3.5/5 overall.

Don't worry about the "eat it all or pay". If you can't finish what you ordered it isn't a problem unless you order ten rolls and only eat half. Its a rule for the community members who order way too much and only eat a few pieces of each one-then don't leave a tip.

I've rarely had to wait long for anything I ordered.

Ice cream is included, BTW. I recommend the red-bean ice cream.

This is what I've been doing for years and have had much better experiences. I walk in, and request to sit at the bar. Hostess is cool with it, and that way I don't have to wait for a table or a waiter to come greet me. I tip the bartender $5 immediately and then place my order: 10 pepper tuna, 3 salmon, 3 white tuna (escolar), 1 crawfish roll, 1 eel roll, and 1 rainbow roll, etc ... Food is delivered 2-3 items at a time over 10-15 minutes time span. As soon as I see the bartender, I place another order for 2-3 rolls (spicy tuna hand roll, Tiger Eye). It's delivered by the time I'm finishing my first order. If I have any room for more, I'll order another 4-8 pieces of pepper tuna, and another hand roll. I leave full, but not bloated.

that's how I get food delivered every 10 minutes. I'm dealing directly with the bartender while watching whatever sports are on TV. I agree that sitting at a table with 2-4 people will take forever to get served. I often eat by myself during weekdays for lunch ($18.95). If I was going out to dinner with the Mrs., I'd select another sushi restaurant to dine at since she only eats a snow crab salad and a crunchy roll and she's full.
