SF 49ers QB Brock Purdy splits rent with roommate and drives a Toyota SUV

Some National Football League players are notorious for leading lavish lifestyles.
San Francisco 49ers starting quarterback Brock Purdy, a captain on one of the league’s two remaining undefeated teams, isn’t one of them. He splits rent with one of his teammates, an offensive lineman, and drives a Toyota Sequoia SUV, he told NBC’s “TODAY” last week. His life off the field is “pretty simple,” Purdy said.
Purdy, a second-year professional, is currently playing on his rookie contract: He was the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, giving him a salary of $870,000 this year. For most people, that’s a high figure — but NFL careers are notoriously short, and Purdy got a taste of how easily a career-ending injury might happen upon tearing an elbow ligament during a playoff game last year.
San Francisco is also an expensive place to live. It has the the third-highest cost of living in the U.S., possibly contributing to Purdy’s desire for a roommate. A one-bedroom apartment or condo’s median monthly rent in San Francisco is $2,993 — 137% higher than the national median — according to Zillow data.
Purdy’s car might not have been cheap. Sequoias are typically the most expensive SUVs in Toyota’s lineup, with a new 2024 model starting at $73,465. Still, it’s hardly a million-dollar sports car, and it’s unclear what year Purdy’s vehicle is from, or whether it was purchased new or used.
Some professional athletes are notorious for saving their paychecks. Retired NFL tight end Rob Gronkowski, likely a future Hall of Famer, amassed roughly $70.63 million from his gameday salaries for his post-football career, living off endorsement money during his playing days.
“The whole point of saving throughout my NFL career was to be set for after football because you don’t know how long football will last,” Gronkowski told CNBC Make It in 2020.

The new Sequoia's are sick and it's a TRD so those are a good $80K+, can easily approach $100K, cheap arse.
Kind of a dumb article tbh, pretty "well duh" all over.

I watched Sharpe and Chad Johnson talking about this. Johnson stated that he lived in team facilities his first two years in the league. Had everything he needed, so he could focus on the game. Purdy is smart to keep it simple and spartan for now.

$870,000 in San Francisco doesn’t go as far

A Sequoia isn’t exactly a piece of crap car. I’m not sure what the writer thinks is an appropriate car for a person who happens to play football.

I love how the Elites think a Toyota SUV is crap.

Why are they making it seem like he is driving a 20-year old car and he is using coupons at the grocery store?
Also, what could your team accomplish when your QB is making <$1M per year, its nice while you have that sort of number but it sure as frick ain't sustainable.

No shite. He was a 7th round draft pick.

I'd tell the team to set up a space for me in the facility if I had to play in SF.

Rents in the Bay area are ridiculous so that is a smart move.

This is what happens when a low draft pick or UDFA becomes a star in any leave.
Jeremy Lin was a sensation at one point but I think he was splitting an apartment with several other NBA players because he was on the league minimum and potentially could have been cut at any moment. And had in fact been cut by 2-3 previous teams.

quote:yes it does. You can live in a nice house in a nice neighborhood and live very comfortably. It’s roughly 32k a month take home lay after taxes, health ins, retirement
$870,000 in San Francisco doesn’t go as far
Or if you want to rent, you can rent a ridiculously nice place for 10k a month and still have 20k left over.

I would assume Purdy probably lives right by the facility in Santa Clara, which is right in the heart of silicon Valley.
Know a guy who just sold his vintage 2,500 Sq ft home there for $2.2M cash to a tech mogul.
Hopefully, real estate by the stadium is a little cheaper than that.

He doesn't make that much money by NFL and Bay Area standards. He likely needs to.

32k take home pay. He doesn’t come close to “needing” a roommate. He could rent a very nice place or own a very nice home and still have 15-20k plus monthly income leftover

It just shows how humble this kid is to live like this, money is not important to him, it's okay to have because you have to pay your bills and all of that. But it's frugal to Purdy and the way he lives shows that, his parents raised him right. Some players get paid in a very mild way meaning not very much money at all for whatever reasons. They could be a UFA that barely makes the team or low round draft pick, but they'll go out and by an expensive home or car that they know that they shouldn't buy. But they want to put on this image or front I call it as if they're rolling in the dough. Smh This kid (Purdy) doesn't care at all about none of that stuff, he'll get a huge pay raise soon, but I doubt it cahnges him at all. He'll probably buy a new truck, and that's it, the rest of his money he'll probably invest it.

Yeah but it could also be an 04 sequoia. They last forever

Being 23 and single and having a roommate and driving an 80k plus car isn’t that rare even for people making good money

For a lot of them the $ they get in the NFL will have to last years. The problem is a large % of them don’t understand that and blow all of their money within a few years of retirement. Purdy won’t have to worry about that when he signs his new contract barring career ending injury
