If Elvis were alive and released In The Ghetto in today’s climate, how would it be received? It came on today while I was mowing the yard and I thought to myself that I think he would catch a “Racist!” charge.

Which would be ironic given that he was way ahead of the times with his acceptance of black music and culture.

Your thoughts?

Part of the lyrics for the youth challenged.

quote:

Well, the world turns And a hungry little boy with a runny nose Plays in the street as the cold wind blows In the ghetto (In the ghetto)

And his hunger burns So he starts to roam the streets at night And he learns how to steal, and he learns how to fight In the ghetto (In the ghetto)

Then one night, in desperation The young man breaks away He buys a gun, he steals a car Tries to run, but he don't get far And his mama cries As a crowd gathers 'round an angry young man Facedown on the street with a gun in his hand

In the year of our Lord 2026 everything is racist.
Therefore, it would be called racist.

It was turned into the Chicago City Anthem.

He's a white male. How do you think the Reddit revolutionaries would receive it?

Elvis would get a pass. Song makes no mention of race, it could be any child.

Today it would be a rich white man co-opting the plight of the underserved for his own personal gain.

He breaks bad, and in the same night he ends up dead?

In 2026, it would take multiple arrests, three lenient judges, and at least a decade before he’d face justice.

Speaking of Elvis, this video came up randomly on my YouTube feed the other day.

How she made his fries PB and banana sandwiches:

I don't know. It seems like most black people I watch on YouTube love and appreciate that he did the song. That's all I got.

the word "ghetto" originally referred to Jews.

Then after WWII it was applied to another group, to replace the racist word "slum"

then ghetto became racist and was replaced by "community"

They’d give Elvis a pass, say he understands their struggle…… then they’d be like what the frick when they realize a country singer from Lubbock wrote it.

It’s a sad song that has stood the test of time, and unfortunately will always be a blueprint for some kids.

My thought is that those lyrics ring true more today than they ever have in the 60-70 years since it came out. They are timeless lyrics really, but perfectly exemplify the cycle of violence and culture that is ubiquitous in that culture today.

Such stupid lyrics. They repeat the same tired trope that black people are committing violent crime because they’re poor and hungry.

Cause if there's one thing that she don't need
It is another hungry mouth to feed
In the ghetto, (In the ghetto).
