Everyone older than 35 remembers how awesome shopping malls were in the 90s.

And when I see pictures of them now, like in the Instagram link below, I realize that they are going away but nothing better is replacing them. It still looks like it would be a great place to go.

Online shopping vs mall shopping reminds me of streaming vs movie stores.

I’m tempted to say it’s just nostalgia, but going to the mall and going to the movie store were fun activities. Online shopping for clothes and movies to watch are not fun activities in my experience.

And it’s not just them, boo boo.

They aren't as convenient as online shopping and delivery to your front door.

Malls are expensive, out of the way, and crowded.

Who wants to deal with any of that?

I grew up in the 80s, but in the middle of nowhere. It was 2 hours to the closest mall, so we never went. I have zero attachment to malls and have always disliked them.

Nothing but big buildings full of city people and suburbanites.

Malls were fun. There is no denying that the social class who now says bad things about the mall used to enjoy going there.

If they were crowded, they wouldn't be dying.

Cost cutting - Running an online store is much cheaper than running a brick & mortar staffed with employees.

Baton Rouge specific, there was a huge shopper flight to the suburbs:

Cortana Mall was built because people didn't want to deal with the crowds at Bon Marche.

Mall of Louisiana was built because people didn't want to deal with the crowds at Cortana.

Tanger was built because people didn't want to deal with the crowds at Mall of LA.

That is not the reason people stopped going to malls. The stores closed after people stopped going.

And that’s not even the point. I’m saying we lost a place to go, that was filled with things to do and people to interact with, and we haven’t replaced it with something better.

Movie theaters were also wonderful but the bottom 10% ruined it for everyone else like they ruin everything else for everyone.

In big cities, malls are as busy as they have ever been.

In small and medium size cities, they are dead.

Loved them as a tween/teenager. But the convenience of having stuff delivered to your house, so you don't have to go out and deal with the culture in the mall is so much more appealing to me.

Kid-traffic or actual sales busy?
The first seems to be the dominant. No one makes a nickel with that one.

The internet is replacing them, and to a lot of people that is better. But people are also more socially connected 24/7 now, so the idea that people used to love going to a singular place where everyone sort of went to shop and hang out is foreign to them.

It sucks though. The mall used to be the place to be. I used to go there with my high school girlfriend all the time and we'd just walk around and hang out. Good times.

Those we don’t speak of killed them.

Super crowded with youths and lots of fights and guns have been pulled in the malls around the country.

Once that happens, white folks start not going.

Plus, with Amazon, you can get most of what you want without ever going to the mall

I went to the mall last month looking for something specific. Zero customer service to be found, ridiculous lines and crowds just mulling around and poor inventory. I’ll stick to local boutiques and online with easy returns.
