I don’t think I have seen a single player hit in as short as 282 carry with a driver ever when I am watching. So how the hell are they saying that’s the trackman average? I understand in driving stats sometimes that doesn’t actually include a driver, but this chart specifically breaks it down by club

I have seen several players only carry it that far on TV.. plus we also don't really see everyone on your either...

On top of that it's and average.. it accounts for everything is: mishits, slices, pull hooks ,etc...

Scheffler averages 285 carry.

That's not total distance

Also to add to above wind. Wyndham Clark who is near the top is carry had a total drive of 263 a few tournaments ago that was straight into a 20 mph wind.

I mean I know that’s what it says but I have just never seen it He is constantly closer to 300 carry than he is 285 on carry when I am watching

False. You’re noticing the total numbers. Theres another 25+ yards of roll out on a flat surface.

I hit a tour 6 iron, with my driver.

2 guests at my home course wanted to know what tee they should play. I said, “how far do you carry a driver?”
They each said “290.”

I said, “play the tips.”

I carry a drive maybe 190 average. In a drought IF I make perfect contact, I can still get to 264 or 279 total. Happens rarely now. Most of my spring/summer drivers are 215-235 total. I know the carry bc when it’s wet, that’s all it gets. Plugged in ground in mud. It helps to know the carry when I am offline so I can begin the search in the right spot. Some people overestimate their carry. It is what it is.

My carry is down to 210-230, sucks but that’s what getting old does

No

I’m watching the number next to the word “Carry”

For example the Scottie Taylor made video where he guesses his yardage. 302 and 303 “carry” is his driver.

When watching at harbor town he had a 297 and 294 carry on the holes I just rewatched with tracer

ETA: rewatching Zurich now. Rory 321 carry on 18. In playoff hole he mishits it with a one handed finish and it’s 289 carry

I’m trying to find some of a guy Mike Joel dahmen hitting

I agree with you. I feel like the numbers start getting weird at 5 iron. Most pros are pulling 6 iron for a 200 yard shot.

I would have guessed average Driver carry was 290+

I feel like I’m looking at Peter Malnati’s trackman numbers above.

I can see your point. I guess the PGA is going to highlight the bombs and not show Kevin Kisner who averages a 264 carry of the tee.

And for reference watching the Byron Nelson. KH Lee just carried driver 285. They didn't even bother to show the distance for Zach Johnson

Right. Maybe it’s just tv bias

If Kevin Kisner was leading the tournament he would be highlighted but he's tied for 98th and most likely won't make the cut so he will not be shown. Even if he hit a 325 yard bomb, being tied for 98th won't get any air time.

I agree but this is “Tour” average. There’s a bunch of guys that are playing that never make it to the tv coverage. Guessing their stats are what lowers what we think would be the average.

But for 285 to be average that means a ton of guys are hitting 270 carry. Doesn’t make sense. Like Phitiger mentioned tell some of the irons seem way off as well

According to NBC Golf, these are the 10 shortest drivers of the golf ball as of Dec 31, 2023. This is total driving distance and not carry distance.

2. David Lingmerth, 278.5 yards
3. William McGirt, 280 yards
4. Zac Blair, 281.6 yards
5. Brendon Todd, 282 yards
6. Austin Cook, 282.3 yards
7. Ryan Armour, 283.6 yards
8. Paul Haley II, 284.1 yards

There are hundreds of drives in an average tournament and we're lucky to see 30-40 a day maybe? Typically you see the longest ones as they highlight how good of a drive it is. No one wants to see the jackass barely clearing the front box.

Because they're trying to hit a certain spot and not necessarily that exact yardage .. If I have a shot into a green at 200 yards I'm not hitting a club that flies that distance because if I catch a flyer and get 10 extra yards I may put myself in danger.. It all depends on firmness of green, slope , grain , dry or wet... A lot of factors play into a shot.. Not just oh I have 200 to the pin I need to hit my 200 club.. that's not smart golf

Right. But then that’s not accurate actual distances

When I or anyone thinks “what’s your distance”, it’s the distance of a stock shot with that club. Including knock downs etc etc is skewing data

Nope I sure didn’t. You lying about it though is pretty standard

And I will gladly meet you at Beau Chene and play a round. We will hit on the trackman and take my average with real balls. If it doesn’t match what I said it would I’ll pay your guest fee. If it does, you cover your guest fee and buy lunch after

Deal?

Or we can meet at loft 18 same bet loser buys lunch and bay fee
