I have two reconstructed knees so I've never been a runner and not into the treadmill or elliptical. For the past three months I've been walking three miles a day at sunrise 5x/week. I try to get in the obligatory 10K steps per day but not always possible due to time contraints with work but I always get in 7K daily at a minimum. I have dropped 14 lbs in three months and have leaned out considerably without losing any muscle mass. I eat cleanly and have cut back drastically on alcohol consumption. Walking has been a godsend as it's easy on my joints and it's good mind therapy. My Apple Watch is great for tracking my steps & calories burned and although most fitness trackers are not 100% accurate it gives me a good baseline. It's also good for listening to music & podcasts on the walks. For those trying to drop weight/bodyfat and who hate conventional steady-state cardio give walking a try, I swear by it. There are tons of articles and You Tube videos listing the benefits. It's not just for old people!

I do 3 miles at lunch when it's cool enough that I won't sweat my arse off. It's nice to get some kind of work in that doesn't have to come after I get home in the evening.

Walking is awesome

I strongly encourage anyone who can to get a standing desk and under desk treadmill - it will change your life

I've mentioned him before, but there's an older guy I see walking close to the house. Dude is jacked. He walks about 4 miles daily with 10 lb dumbbells and does curls to presses with them.

I noticeably feel better when I’m getting 10k+ steps daily.

Even join StepBet games to hold myself accountable when I feel the laziness creeping up.

I love walking. I average about 15k steps in the fall/spring. Need to figure out something for the winter. Might get a walking pad for the house.

Awesome videos. Thanks for posting. I’ve recently entered the Apple Watch world and been grinding to get 10-12k/day.

Walking is awesome. I started last year. Dropped about 15 pounds. This year moved into functional weight training and my walking dropped off. I recently re-focused myself to make sure I was walking on my off days from the gym. Funny thing happened. I used to walk because my knees would bother me when I tried to run. My weight training has strengthened my joints as well as my muscles and I find myself wanting to jog for part of my walks. And I can do so with no pain. I thought I just had “bad knees” but I just needed to strengthen them a bit.

With my obese friends trying to lose weight, but feeling like they can't run, this is the advice I give them.

Start walking! It's easy on the body, you can still get great cardio workouts, and you can lose weight if you still eat healthy!

Walking really needs to be promoted so much more in people that are scared of running, but need to get some free cardio in.

Agree 100% with everything posted…

I also try to make 10k steps as my absolute daily minimum. Average is 12-15k daily and I sometimes eclipse 20k if I’m off. I’ve also significantly cut back on alcohol and did a 0 alcohol dry month in August prior to start of football season.

Both have made a huge positive physical impact so far and I want to keep it up. Listening to podcasts definitely helps the time go by quicker.

I love walking and feel better physically and mentally when getting 10k or more steps.

I average over 10k steps until this year. Broken leg earlier and now a broken foot have me sidelined for 5 months crutches. Can't wait until I can get them numbers up again.

Anyone ise a weighted backpack or vest. I normally put about 15 lbs of books in a backpack a few times a week.

Love walking. Right now I'm probably around 8-9K a day, breaking 10K a few times a week.

My wife gave me her old Fitbit about two years ago and invited me to join a friendly-competitive walking group. I was hooked. I had a streak of 560 straight days of 10K steps or more. Eventually worked out the math to where I was averaging about 11K a day--which translated into over 4 million steps for all of 2022.

2022 wasn't some down year either. I battled a ton of personal stuff, including my wife's chemo and the deaths of two immediate family members. I am not a selfish guy by any means but I made it a point to reach that goal every day no matter what--even if it meant doing laps around my living room for an hour straight after everyone else had gone to bed.

Luckily I work on a big campus and can knock a decent chunk out just walking to and from my car. Taking the dog around the block 2-3 times a day was helpful too.

I love doing yardwork in the morning too. I can easily eclipse 10K by lunchtime if I have enough shite to do.

I hit 20K probably eight or nine teams times a year. Personal best is 36K.

Never tried it with weights though! I should look into it.

I love my walks everyday. Put my music in and go.
This month makes a year that I have slowed my pace to a walk.
Running has always been a part of my identity in a way.
I still tried to get in the occasional run but not like I used to.
I also teach cycle classes 4 days a week. So I don’t really need the extra cardio.
But something about it makes me happy.
Being outside
Fresh air
Not killing myself to keep a certain pace
It therapeutic!!

What heart rate do you folks usually try to stay around? (When not rucking or carrying weights)

Walking is awesome exercise and it can be done at a low intensity if working around injuries ailments etc.
I tell the folks who don't want to go to a gym that there is no need if you are just wanting to lose weight walk 30 mins 5 times a week and eat real foods. It will absolutely work and doesn't take much effort. I did 35 min this morning on treadmill at 14.5% incline at 3.0 speed. Felt like I could slay a giant when I was done. Sometimes in evenings after dinner I will do a 30 min walk around neighborhood also just depends on how I feel.

There aren't a ton of absolutes in health, but one absolute is that the more active you are, the better your situation is gonna be.

Look, running could arguably be better than walking, but walking is light years ahead of nothing. Bottom line is the best exercise is one that you're motivated to consistently do.

Walking is vastly underrated. Well, not in this board. My only recommendation is to take the earbuds out. Tune in to the world around you for a little while.
