Most of the "protesters" in college campuses know very little about the conflict or its history.
It's just a social gathering for the less popular kids on campus to gather with other unpopular kids and sort of form their own group to feel like they belong. They go back to their dorms and get drunk & high, and act like they're important. They're just copying what they see happening elsewhere, but in reality, it's their version of a fraternity or sorority.
It's a party, man!
