With my obese friends trying to lose weight, but feeling like they can't run, this is the advice I give them.

Start walking! It's easy on the body, you can still get great cardio workouts, and you can lose weight if you still eat healthy!

Walking really needs to be promoted so much more in people that are scared of running, but need to get some free cardio in.

Agree 100% with everything posted…

I also try to make 10k steps as my absolute daily minimum. Average is 12-15k daily and I sometimes eclipse 20k if I’m off. I’ve also significantly cut back on alcohol and did a 0 alcohol dry month in August prior to start of football season.

Both have made a huge positive physical impact so far and I want to keep it up. Listening to podcasts definitely helps the time go by quicker.

As the day has progressed the two step apps are now only 17 steps apart, the Steps app took a little bit to catch up for some reason. Close enough.

Nice. I wish the regular watch could get that face. I like the step progression displayed.

I did the Whole 30 program during the month of Sept and the changes were noticable. No alcohol, no sugars, no rice or any other grains, no processed food. It's a great program.

I love walking and feel better physically and mentally when getting 10k or more steps.

I average over 10k steps until this year. Broken leg earlier and now a broken foot have me sidelined for 5 months crutches. Can't wait until I can get them numbers up again.

Anyone ise a weighted backpack or vest. I normally put about 15 lbs of books in a backpack a few times a week.

Yes, I ruck 2-3 times a week. 40lbs or if I’m feeling froggy I’ll put 50lbs in. I’ve almost quit running completely, I walk, ruck or run bleachers. Bleachers are the best bang for your buck IMO.

When my gym was closed and relocating, I was walking 2 miles a day with a 80# sandbag and 2 miles empty. I need to get back to doing it again. I worked up a hell of a sweat at a nice steady pace.

I stopped the weighted walks while pracipating in Squatober. Figured that would just be too much on my knees.

20lb vest for 30-40 minutes each morning 5 days a week. It's nice to get the heart moving early.

I also find that the fitness rings on Apple watches take some time to catch up to workouts. I use mine as a HR monitor on my Peloton. It will record a 45 minute workout, but not update the active minutes or calories burned right away. I usually work out at night, and will be around 15-20 minutes for the day before that. I glance down when I'm done and it has counted maybe 20-25 more minutes, but 10 minutes later I'll get the buzz and tell me I hit my goal and update calories burned.

Love walking. Right now I'm probably around 8-9K a day, breaking 10K a few times a week.

My wife gave me her old Fitbit about two years ago and invited me to join a friendly-competitive walking group. I was hooked. I had a streak of 560 straight days of 10K steps or more. Eventually worked out the math to where I was averaging about 11K a day--which translated into over 4 million steps for all of 2022.

2022 wasn't some down year either. I battled a ton of personal stuff, including my wife's chemo and the deaths of two immediate family members. I am not a selfish guy by any means but I made it a point to reach that goal every day no matter what--even if it meant doing laps around my living room for an hour straight after everyone else had gone to bed.

Luckily I work on a big campus and can knock a decent chunk out just walking to and from my car. Taking the dog around the block 2-3 times a day was helpful too.

I love doing yardwork in the morning too. I can easily eclipse 10K by lunchtime if I have enough shite to do.

I hit 20K probably eight or nine teams times a year. Personal best is 36K.

Never tried it with weights though! I should look into it.

I love my walks everyday. Put my music in and go.
This month makes a year that I have slowed my pace to a walk.
Running has always been a part of my identity in a way.
I still tried to get in the occasional run but not like I used to.
I also teach cycle classes 4 days a week. So I don’t really need the extra cardio.
But something about it makes me happy.
Being outside
Fresh air
Not killing myself to keep a certain pace
It therapeutic!!

Just in case you want to add a little more challenge, you can get ruck backpacks and weights off of Amazon for cheap.

What heart rate do you folks usually try to stay around? (When not rucking or carrying weights)

115-130 is a great heart rate zone for a brisk walk.

Most of my adult life I’ve had a resting heart rate of 70+.

This winter I started doing a short walk at lunch, no more than 20 minutes. I go every weekday unless weather prevents it. My RHR rate is now usually right at 60 or even below.

Other benefits are a nice tan, and this winter I didn’t feel any of the “SAD” that normally gets me due to getting off of work in the dark.

Oh, and my heart rate on the walks averages 100-105, so nothing too fast.

Walking is so underrated.

I abandoned the barbell and became a serious daily runner sometime around 2003 and I kept after it until about 2009. I'm way too heavy to jog/run nowadays(and in all honesty, I was way too heavy back then(200-210lb) to be running like that as well, but I was younger and stubborn, so I did it anyway), but walking fulfills everything jogging/running ever could for me. I'm not a racer. I'm not fast. I wasn't looking to be competitive with what I was doing at the time. My only goals with jogging were to maximize cardiovascular fitness for general health purposes. I also wish I had realized years ago that walking was all I should have been doing. Would have saved me some trouble and time.

Just FYI because its a very common misconception, but I read a couple of studies and talked to some orthopedic specialists that have said there is no evidence that higher body weight impacts your knees or other joints at all. Running while having prior knee injuries does, and being heavier probably makes it more likely that you injure something.
