Every weekend.
Friday and Saturday night
Was our family time as my dad worked night shift during the week.
Looking back it was definitely excessive and a waste of a lot of money but it’s just what we did

Going to McDonald's or Pizza Hut as a kid was like a magical journey

Rarely, but when we did it was Ezell's Fish cabin on the Tombigbee river.

As a kid, probably 3-4 times per year if we're excluding fast food. Even that wasn't very often.
We eat out about once per month, excluding fast food. We might eat that 2-3 times per month.

I remember going to a restaurant at the Fred's landing when we'd go out on the boat

I remember getting KFC in Atlanta when I was 10, it was such a rarity.

Piccadilly was about it. Maybe 1-2x’s a month. But we was POOR, just glad we had food in the pantry to eat.

There was a place in Vidalia called the fish fry probably 30 years ago that was there until I went to college. We would go there damn near every Saturday night for years when I was a kid. God damn they had AWESOME fried catfish. Actual catfish, they didn’t just call it that and then give you some Asian trash fish.

With Dad every other weekend would crush Ryans on sherwood working on that A1C elevation

Seldom. It was a special thing.
We dine out every weekend and occasionally weekdays when we feel like it, but I cook most weekdays. I do love a cocktail I didn’t make.

And how often do you now? It seems like cooking at home has flipped to be the special occasion now and ordering/eating out is the norm.
Very rarely. We were more likely to do a fish fry on a weekend than go to some restaurant (lived on a river, family farm with lots of family around). Even when we had a semi-nice restaurant in the area, we went maybe once every few months.
The only exception was if we had to go to Monroe for a dentist appointment, back-to-school shopping, etc. We may end up eating somewhere, but more often than not we would try to get everything done in time to eat at home (mom was a fantastic cook and enjoyed cooking).

Every other Friday we would rotate between Middendorfs, Dunks (next to middendorfs), Original Don’s seafood in Kenner and Roussel’s in Laplace.

I forgot about Shoney's having a kids eat free day and Pizza Inn in Metairie having the same.
We would go there on those days sometimes

my parents cooked every night, and we ate together.
This is how I grew up, also. I’d be interested to know what percentage of American households this still occurs in. I’d guess <5%.
To the question, once every couple of months.

On our birthdays.
Even got to go to Pancho's once, but that was for my brother and myself since our b-days are only a week apart.

We prob went out more than most, every few weeks. Today most meals are from takeout and i feel like we cook more than most (cook 2-3 dinners from scratch a week.) My mom was a sahm though.

As a kid Friday nights. M-Tr we ate a home cooked meal as a family.
That’s more or less the same thing we do now.

As a kid wed eat out or do take out once a week. Normally on Friday or Saturday. Sometimes wed get fast food one night sprinkled in during the week
As an adult, probably once during the week and then on Friday and Saturday
