So last November I had numerous fraudulent transactions from my bank account. It seemed like they were purchasing a lot of gift cards from my Apple account. Apple reimbursed me and I canceled my debit card and reset passwords. Well today in a diff account for a different bank someone made a purchase for a “simple tire”
Out of PA for 600 dollars. Could this be the same group of people and how would they be getting my info to make these purchases??

There's a keylogger on one or more of your devices that you use to access these accounts.

What’s a key logger and how do I put a stop to it?

Do you have 2FA enabled for your accounts? If so, is it done through SMS or an Authenticator app?

Malware that tracks your keystrokes so they can get your passwords.

Enable MFA on all of your accounts that matter.

This. I don’t even own debit cards anymore. Pay for everything with a credit card and just pay the balance. Have a checkbook in the safe with the cash for when I need that.

A key logger could be disastrous. Elderly people are at such a disadvantage over this kind of thing. The don’t stand a chance.

How would one know if one is on a device?

Yeah my dad just got scammed because a guy was spoofing the number for the gambling site he uses. Told him to get his money out of his account he needed to install a program on his computer and my dad did it because the phone number was legit.

Can you tell me what porn sites you've been using so that I can not?

Windows Defender is installed natively on Windows. I've always heard positive opinions on that. I have no clue on Apple or Android. don't click unknown links, especially in emails.

What financial institution is not mandating MFA today. That is a basic InfoSec requirement.

For the OP, it seems it would be well worth the expense for you to get ID shield. You need a deep scan of the dark web.

Note to self:

“Never put debit cards as a form of payment”

It’s a much harder “recovery” than with credit cards & you can really get hurt.

And usually you have to do police reports with debit cards, with CC’s, you don’t

Someone has cloned your card, because they were able to use your track data (the stuff on the magnetic strip on the card, which is more than just the card number).

You are shopping at some store or gas station that has installed a device to steal the track data off of your cards when you use them. It's most likely not a Walmart/Murphy's or other major brand, because at most of them, attendants are trained to look for the skimmers that are installed over the top of the actual card reader at each shift change.

Get in the habit of jiggling the reader that you're using before sticking your card in, to see if the potential skimming device "pulls off." They're usually attached with something like automotive body tape.

Report it to your local popo, and let them know where you typically shop. They probably have had similar reports, but don't have enough correlational data to figure out where the skimming crew is actually working.
