How misguided were kids when they chose grunge over hair metal?

Hair metal had jumped the shark. A new sound was needed. Grunge and alternative were that sound.

Hair metal had gotten corny and stale AF. Nirvana was something fresh and new.

Slave to the Grind came out in the 90s, didnt have a hair band feel. It had a couple meaningful songs on it.

There’s a real good oral history of hair metal - “Nothin’ But a Good Time” - that talks about how the genre killed itself with too many bad bands. Things started to dip around 1990 - that’s when ticket and record sales dipped for some of the second tier bands like Cinderella and Ratt.
Hair metal and grunge had a lot of the same influences - Kiss, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper. It’s just that the grunge bands threw a little more punk in the mix.

Bands like Skid Row were very different than pretenders like Poison. I hate that all thse bands ended up lumped together.

Hair metal had grown stale and the founding/core bands had self-imploded because of the lifestyle so agree that a new sound was needed

However the grunge alternative movement seriously harmed the guitar as an instrument for about two decades and glorified shitty musicians

hair metal

At the time, it had run its course and starting to become a mockery of itself.

The worst part was some really good metal/hard rock music that came out around then that got lost in the shuffle.

the drugs and lifestyle made hair metal unsustainable from bands not being able to sustain it or stay together, towards the end you were lucky to get a decent concert assuming they weren't drunk or high

the result was the advent of the grunge scene and eventually all the pot smokers from that era aged out of it, what a depressing time that music was
